Engin Özkoç, Sakarya MP, made a speech at the Turkish Parliament on April 16 on the refusal of the Abkhazian children to the 23rd April Children Festival organized by TRT, the official broadcasting agency of Turkey. Mr Özkoç stated that the children from Abkhazia were invited to the festival by TRT, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey prevented them to join the festival with the Turkish children, by saying that they cannot come to Turkey without the permission of the Ministry. Mr Özkoç also mentioned that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a letter to all municipalities in Turkey and told them not to accept any application from Abkhazia without its prior approval.

TRT has invited hundreds of children groups from about 50 countries. Abkhazia was also officially invited, and TRT announced it on the official web page of the festival. However, under the pressure of Georgia, TRT first changed the name of Abkhazia as “Abkhazia Autonomous Republic-Georgia”, and later on cancelled its invitation altogether.

The Federation of the Caucasian Associations (Kaffed) strongly condemned the actions of TRT.
